You’ve completed detox, rehab, and our aftercare programs and are now part of the Beachway Alumni Association. Staying free of alcohol and drugs is a lifelong pursuit, but one that is made easier with the company of others like you who have gone through similar experiences.
Returning home after completing an inpatient program can be a difficult transition. Navigating the often rocky path with family, friends and work can be an isolating experience. With the Beachway Alumni Association and Resource Center, you don’t need to embark on the path of re-integration alone.
As part of our ongoing alumni support, you’ll still have access to our team of therapists and counselors, as well as access to individual and group sessions. Many of our alumni have found long-term success through the 12-step program and alternative therapies.
About the 12-Step Model of Recovery
The 12-step model of recovery was created by Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in 1935 to deal specifically with alcohol abuse. Since then, the 12-step recovery model has been adapted to aid in recovery from a wide range of substance abuse problems including Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, and Crystal Meth Anonymous to name only a few.
It’s important that you find the right 12-step program that leads to the greatest chance at success. Some programs may have religious or spiritual overtones. There are also secular programs available.
The basis of all 12-step recovery programs is addressing the social, emotional, spiritual, cognitive and behavioral issues needed to abstain from substance abuse. These beliefs include:
- Recognize that you can’t beat addiction alone.
- Accept and surrender your powerlessness over addiction.
- Replace self-centered tendencies by reaching out to other for help and in turn, offering your help to others.
- Embark on a path of renewal.
- Find a mentor or sponsor to help you stay sober.

Meet James Waterman, Alumni Coordinator
James began working for Beachway as a part-time weekend Behavior Health Technician. Soon after he moved into the position of an Intake Coordinator, joining Beachway full-time. He has since been promoted to manage the Resource Center and is now the Alumni Coordinator as well. His friendly demeanor, passion for helping those in need, creativity and work ethic bring value to Beachway. He is always looking for new ways to help support the growth of our clients, in treatment and beyond, as Alumni start on their path to recovery. He is passionate about community service and is currently working towards a Masters in Social Work at Florida Atlantic University. His personal focus is providing support to the clients by providing resources, vocational training and life skills that are essential to bridging the gap between treatment and the real world.

Meet Jana Costa, Meditation Facilitator
Jana began working at Beachway in early 2014 as a Behavioral Health Tech. Jana also has additional experience outside of Beachway working with people in treatment and in recovery. Being in long term recovery herself, Jana has a passion for sharing her ability to translate her own experience with the 12-step program and how it works. Early in her own recovery Jana began using meditation and prayer in her own program. Meditation became a daily practice and she is now achieving her certification as a Meditation Instructor at the University of Holistic Theology. She has implemented an instruction class for our clients guiding them in meditation and teaching them about the benefits of meditation and how it works hand and hand with the 12 steps. She also makes them aware of the physical and mental health benefits of a meditation practice. In addition, Jana is a BioSound Technologies Technician in which she is able to introduce clients to meditation and help them learn a Bio Feedback technique to assist them with relapse prevention.
