What Is Drug Addiction and What Causes It?

According to the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM): “Addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry. Dysfunction in these circuits leads to characteristic biological, psychological, social and spiritual manifestations. This is reflected in an individual pathologically pursuing reward and/or relief by substance use and other behaviors. Addiction is characterized by an inability to consistently abstain, impairment in behavioral control, craving, diminished recognition of significant problems with one’s behaviors and interpersonal relationships, and a dysfunctional emotional response. Like other chronic diseases, addiction often involves cycles of relapse and remission. Without treatment or engagement in recovery activities, addiction is progressive and can result in disability or premature death.”

In other words, addiction to drugs changes your brain. It sets up a pattern of substance use and dependence that destroys lives. Not just yours, but also all those that care about you. With repeated use of substances that change the chemical balance of the brain, the brain adapts and needs the substance to function normally. When the drug is removed the brain struggles to regain balance and withdrawal is experienced, along with cravings for the drug to relieve the symptoms. The perplexing denial that so often accompanies addictions makes the addict think that they don’t have a problem, or that this time will be different, or that they can handle it, or that no one will know, or that “I’m only hurting myself”, etc.

Addiction is Chronic and Progressive

Addiction is chronic and progressive. That means it will always persist and will only get worse if left untreated. With treatment, addiction can be managed and long-term, permanent recovery is possible. It takes persistence, on-going maintenance and regular attention to recovery promoting activities and behaviors.

So what causes addiction? Science is still exploring this question, but we do know that there are many factors that can contribute to the development of addiction. Genetics plays a role and increases the likelihood of developing an addiction by about fifty percent. Biological factors are combined with environmental and social factors and can tip the genetic scales one way or another. If there is a family history of addiction, alcoholism, or other behavioral health issues, both the genetic factor and the possible behavioral element, due to exposure to family member’s addictive and dysfunctional behaviors, are both potentially causal. The presence of other cooccurring psychological or psychiatric disorders plays a role, as does adverse childhood experiences (ACES), a history of trauma, life stressors, peer pressure, and the frequent exposure to one or more addictive substances or behaviors. The over-prescribing of addictive medications, like opiates and benzodiazepines, has contributed to the development of addictions and once an addiction has taken hold, the likelihood of relapse or developing an addiction to another substance or behavior is much greater. The younger someone is when they begin using alcohol or drugs also plays a part in the development of a future addiction, in part because of the detrimental effect on the still developing brain. Addiction crosses all gender, racial, ethnic, age, and socioeconomic bounds. No one is immune and, depending on the factors, all are at risk, given the right circumstances and conditions.

What is Drug Addiction Rehabilitation?

Beachway's drug rehabilitation center in the lobby

The first step to recovery is recognizing there is a problem and seeking help. If you are reading this for yourself then you may be coming to that conclusion, or you may have known it for some time. If you have a family member that you are concerned about, they may not be at that point. If that is the case, a frank and honest discussion without threats or pleading, expressing your concerns and pointing out the obvious signs of addiction may help a loved one to see they have a problem, but it may take time for them to admit it. An intervention conducted by a professional with family and friends sitting down and confronting the addicted person may also help, but until someone is ready and willing to acknowledge they need drug addiction rehab, it is difficult to coerce them. If someone is a danger to themselves or others in the State of Florida, a court-mandated treatment can be obtained through the Marchman Act, a legal proceeding. Twelve Step groups like Al-Anon and Nar-Anon can provide help and support to family members and friends of addicts and are free of charge to attend.

When you are ready to seek help, a professional assessment is important to determine what level of care and type of drug rehabilitation center will be most appropriate and beneficial. Many different factors, including what substance, how much, and how long you have been using, your history of treatment, are there any co-occurring mental health disorders, your family and social support, your financial situation, and your general health, will all need to be considered. You can call our confidential helpline today if you or a loved one needs rehab for drugs.

What About Drug Withdrawal?

If you experience withdrawal a medically supervised detox is probably indicated and, for some substances, necessary to prevent life-threatening symptoms. A comprehensive drug rehab program will begin with a medically supervised detox to make the initial withdrawal is safe and as comfortable as possible. Getting through withdrawal successfully is challenging, as the cravings to use to relieve uncomfortable symptoms can be very strong. Being in a supportive, understanding, safe environment is the best way to get through this first phase and not return to using substances addictively to relieve symptoms. Depending on your symptoms and what type of drug(s) you are addicted to, there may be medications that a specially trained Addictions Specialist medical professional can prescribe to help in your recovery. For example, methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone are medications that are recommended by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) for the treatment of opioid use.

A qualified MD who specializes in the treatment of addiction is required to determine the best medication and dosage, based on an individual’s needs. Choosing a drug rehab center that can support you from detox to aftercare ensures a continuity of care and consistency throughout the entire process.

How Long Does Drug Withdrawal Last?

Every person is unique, but some symptoms of withdrawal may be felt for weeks, months, and sometimes years, in cases of protracted withdrawal. The most severe, acute symptoms generally last anywhere from several days to one or two weeks, depending on the substance, amount of use, length of use and individual variables. Post-acute withdrawal symptoms (PAWS) may come and go for much longer. It is important to understand these symptoms and how to manage them. Initial treatment for withdrawal is detoxification or “detox,” which will help ease symptoms, provide a safe environment, as well as necessary medical supervision. The detox is usually separate from residential drug rehab treatment and stabilizes the client for in-patient rehab. Our top-rated drug rehab in Florida provides a qualified, medically supervised detox facility, followed by in-patient drug rehab treatment, with the continuity of care necessary for successful treatment outcomes.

What Comes After Detox?

Participating in an inpatient or outpatient drug addiction rehabilitation program after detox is highly recommended and can increase your chances of staying clean and sober. How long is rehab? According to The National Institute on Drug Abuse:

“research has shown unequivocally that good outcomes are contingent on adequate treatment length. Generally, for residential or outpatient treatment, participation for less than 90 days is of limited effectiveness, and treatment lasting significantly longer is recommended for maintaining positive outcomes.”

Outpatient drug addiction rehab offers the freedom to continue working and remaining in the home environment, however, if you have difficulty abstaining from drugs and alcohol in that environment, it is a disadvantage. In outpatient drug addiction treatment, you will be responsible for housing and transportation, as well as food and personal care. The hours of therapy will be limited and not as intensive as in residential drug addiction rehabilitation. Usually, in Intensive Outpatient Therapy (IOP) an average of 9 or 10 hours per week of group and individual therapy is what to expect. Insurance will only cover the therapeutic hours. Intensive Outpatient (IOP) is a drug rehab treatment option for someone who may not be able to get away from work or family responsibilities and doesn’t need the level of care offered by inpatient drug addiction rehabilitation. It is generally less expensive than residential drug treatment programs. Some drug rehab centers offer “sober living” or transitional housing, but you will have to pay separately for that, and insurance will not cover it. Beware of programs that tell you if you sign up for their IOP program insurance will pay for your housing; it may be an illegal offer by a less than reputable drug rehab facility that sounds good, but won’t help you with your recovery and could make matters worse. IOP with transitional housing is frequently a step-down level of care following inpatient drug addiction treatment that can be very helpful in many cases for people transitioning from an inpatient drug treatment program.

Inpatient (Residential Treatment) is a drug addiction treatment program that gives you the opportunity to fully focus on your recovery. A comprehensive, all-inclusive drug addiction facility provides a safe, supportive environment with evidence-based therapies, plus the medical and psychiatric care necessary to address your drug addiction, any co-occurring mental health disorders, and physical health needs, as well as providing family support, case management and thorough, long-term, after-care planning. A holistic approach to drug addiction rehabilitation, along with recreational therapy, provides additional services to add to your overall comfort and well-being and a better treatment outcome. Inpatient treatment also gives you the break from the stressors of life that may contribute to your addiction, as well as a drug and alcohol-free environment. Food, housing, and all amenities are provided and, in a reputable drug rehab facility, many comforts of home and luxuries are also included. Intensive daily drug addiction therapy, including individual and group sessions, as well as medical supervision and holistic treatments, are included in the best Florida drug rehab programs. Typically inpatient drug rehab lasts anywhere from 30 to 90 days. It is often covered by most health insurance and you may qualify for short-term disability coverage if you have a policy through your employer or privately. Family Medical Leave (FMLA) may also be applicable, securing your job until you return home, and even financing can be an option. Beachway’s helpline can answer questions regarding finances, costs and insurance, so call 877-284-0353, toll-free, to get confidential answers to all your questions.

What Are The Challenges of Inpatient Drug Rehab?

Inpatient drug treatment centers are generally the most recommended treatment for substance abuse and drug addiction, but they can pose some challenges for people. It is important to consider and understand the commitment one is making when entering a drug rehab facility. It will mean taking time away from family, work, school, and friends. If you have children and or pets, arrangements must be made for their care. The support of your family is an important component of the treatment process and the dynamics of these relationships will be changed, ultimately for the better, but it can be a challenging disruption of the status quo.

It is also a financial commitment. Inpatient is more expensive than outpatient drug addiction rehabilitation. Insurance may cover much of the cost, but there will still be expenses and the loss of income for that period of time. Of course, there will also be the savings of not buying drugs and alcohol, which can off-set some of the cost! Careful consideration of the financial implications and making informed, responsible decisions is important.

If you are a “take charge” type of person, one who is used to making decisions for yourself and controlling your environment, inpatient residential drug rehab may be a difficult adjustment, getting used to being on a set schedule and having your activities and environment controlled and restricted.
Having the experience and wisdom of experts and professionals to assist you in this crucial decision can be very helpful and important in this life-changing commitment. Your life and the life of your loved ones hang in the balance. Call and speak to our confidential helpline at 877-284-0353 today for more information and guidance if you or a loved one are considering a rehab for drugs and want the most appropriate, best drug rehab program possible.

How to Choose a Reputable Drug Rehab Facility

You may have looked at other drug rehab facilities or possibly been to treatment before. So what makes one program better than another? How can you be sure you are choosing the right drug rehab center? Of course, these are very critical questions. You deserve the best drug rehab program possible to insure your best recovery. Let’s go over some of the differences and help you consider what is right for you.

Finding a reputable drug addiction rehabilitation center is crucial to your recovery and long-term positive outcome. Unfortunately, there are some less than trustworthy facilities and doing some research before making a decision is important. First, is the facility accredited by the Joint Commission? They are the governing body that reviews and accredits US health care organizations and programs. Does the drug treatment program have any other accreditations or certifications? You can review Beachway’s list of accreditations here.

How long have they been in business? A new facility may sound great on paper and may look good, but are they experienced and established in the field? What is their staff like? Do they have licensed, credentialed therapists and expert medical professionals? Are their programs individualized and specific to each client’s needs? How many clients do they serve at a time and what is each therapist’s caseload size? What is the environment like? Is it an “institutional” setting or a more “home-like” environment? What are the amenities that are offered? Do they take your insurance and what are the financial requirements and out of pocket expenses? Are they making any great, “too good to be true” offers or pressuring you to make a snap decision? All of these, along with your own personal preferences, should be considered when choosing a drug rehab center.
