Treatment doesn’t end once you’ve completed your inpatient detox or residential program. Ongoing aftercare is a keystone of successful long term recovery. The aftercare stage is long-term and focuses on developing the skills and strategies needed to re-enter normal life with minimal assistance while abstaining from alcohol and drugs. There is no defined timeline for aftercare; it may last months or even years depending on your individual needs.

Whether stepping down to an outpatient level of care or becoming and active part of Beachway’s Alumni Community, aftercare can be a crucial step in maintaining long-term recovery.

Aftercare Phase 1: Intensive Outpatient

Following the completion of a residential or partial hospitalization program (PHP) stay, a therapist will help a patient decide whether it is better for them to return home or continue at an outpatient level of care at Beachway for a period of time. A therapist and patient will design a customized plan to ensure that each patient is taking the necessary steps needed to ensure a successful transition.

The primary goals of Phase 1 outpatient include:

  • Begin to live independently while maintaining a focus on recovery
  • Life Skills education
  • Receive assistance with ongoing education.
  • Develop a structured schedule to obtain employment.

  • One individual therapy session per week
  • Three per week group therapy sessions
  • Access to Beachway’s resource and alumni network
  • Family counseling

Aftercare Phase 2: Outpatient

By this point a patient has likely overcome many obstacles and has gained a foothold in early recovery.  They have developed healthy living habits and have worked on assimilating back into a more independent living environment.  Perhaps they have started to work again or have continued in their education – they are experiencing life in recovery.

A person at this stage in their recovery may not need the intense level of guidance they once required.  They may however benefit from attending an outpatient program to ensure that they are continuing to develop and maintain the healthy habits that they have recently acquired.

The main goals of Phase 2 outpatient include:

  • Develop and strengthen personal strategies to avoid relapse.
  • Develop a personalized plan on how you’ll navigate your life at home with friends and family.

  • One group therapy session per week
  • One individual session per week
  • Family counseling

What You’ll Learn in Outpatient

The main purpose of outpatient therapy is relapse prevention. As patients step down to this lower level of care they can continue to work with their therapist to develop healthy coping mechanisms to manage stress without turning to drug or alcohol. During this stage they can also monitor and address any related mental health issues that arise.

Here are some benefits to continuing with outpatient care after completing an inpatient stay:

  • Identify personal triggers that may lead to substance abuse. These triggers may be environmental, psychological or social.
  • Learn and develop healthy ways to cope with stress that accompanies daily life.
  • Develop resilience. One minor slip doesn’t have to turn into a major relapse. Fostering the skills to pick yourself up and keep going when minor slips occur is vital to long-term success.

Alumni Support

A crucial component of lasting recovery is community.  At Beachway Therapy Center we believe that a sense of community is what can make the difference between periodic abstinence and sustained long-term sobriety.  We offer weekly local alumni meetings at our campus in West Palm Beach, the format is food and fellowship followed by a speaker that will communicate his experience for our alumni community.

We also provide weekly online meetings that ensure our patients have a way to stay connected with one another even if they return home and cannot attend our local meetings.

Beachway Alumni

All of our Alumni meetings are facilitated by our Alumni Coordinator, Sean Stiles.  Sean is dedicated to providing all of the resources necessary to ensure that each patient has what they need to stay connected to the Beachway community after they discharge from the program.
