Once a person has completed an inpatient treatment program, continued aftercare is designed to help keep them on track and avoid relapse. Re-entering normal life can feel extremely intimidating, but it’s important to remember you are not alone in this fight.

Ongoing aftercare is key to successful long-term recovery. The aftercare stage of treatment focuses on developing the skills and strategies needed to re-enter normal life with minimal assistance while developing a healthy and positive lifestyle.

Whether taking the step to the outpatient level of care or becoming an active part of Beachway’s Alumni Community, aftercare can be a crucial step in maintaining long-term recovery.

Effective Components of A Drug Rehab Aftercare Program

A person’s journey to lifelong recovery does not end when they leave the doors of their rehabilitation center. Aftercare is often essential in overcoming many of the challenges faced when reacclimating to life outside of inpatient care. It provides patients with ongoing support to normalize a life without the substance(s) that had previously controlled their lives.

So, what makes an effective aftercare program?

  • Focused relapse prevention. Defeating an addiction and overcoming the withdrawals is no small feat. Aftercare should include intensive relapse prevention to minimize the chance of falling back into one’s addiction.
  • Behavioral training. Another critical component to aftercare is the process of changing the harmful behaviors that led a person to previously become addicted. By replacing destructive tendencies with new behaviors and ways of thinking, patients are able to react differently and focus on living a healthy life.
  • Continued therapy/counseling as needed. The goal of rehabilitation is to help empower patients so they feel confident and independent strong on their road to recovery. Occasional individual or group therapy sessions can be helpful to a person’s long-term success, and in many cases can provide an enriching sense of community.

Family counseling. In some cases, family counseling could be a part of a continued aftercare program. As a primary support for many, it’s important for families to understand their role in helping loved ones to achieve and stick to their rehabilitation goals.

How Aftercare Rehab Works at Beachway

The main purpose of outpatient therapy is relapse prevention. The National Institute of Drug Abuse finds that continual, behavioral care creates positive effects for patients. At this important step of care, patients can continue to work with their therapist to develop healthy coping mechanisms to manage stress without turning to drugs or alcohol.

Here are some benefits to continuing with outpatient care after completing an inpatient stay:

  • Identify personal triggers that may lead to substance abuse. These triggers may be environmental, psychological or social.
  • Learn and develop healthy ways to cope with stress that accompanies daily life.
  • Develop resilience. One minor slip doesn’t have to turn into a major relapse. Fostering the skills to pick themselves up and keep going when minor slips occur is vital to long-term success.

Step One: The importance of Therapy for Drug Rehab Aftercare

Following the completion of a residential or partial hospitalization program (PHP) stay, a therapist will help a patient decide whether it is better for them to return home or continue at an outpatient level of care at Beachway. A therapist and patient will design a customized plan together to ensure that each patient is taking the necessary steps needed to ensure a successful transition.

Aftercare Rehab Phase 1 Goals:

  • Begin to live independently while maintaining a focus on recovery
  • Life Skills education
  • Receive assistance with ongoing education.
  • Develop a structured schedule to obtain employment.

Structure:

  • One individual therapy session per week
  • Three per week group therapy sessions
  • Access to Beachway’s resource and alumni network
  • Family counseling

The goal of this initial phase of aftercare is to help empower patients to feel confident in their return to normal life. Each patient’s aftercare program will be personalized to their specific needs and unique circumstances. Therapy sessions can be done virtually or on-site at our campus in West Palm Beach.

Step Two: Drug Rehab Aftercare and Sober Living

By this point a patient has likely developed healthy living habits — assimilating back into a more independent living environment, working, or continuing their education.

A person at this stage in their recovery may not need the intense level of guidance they once required. The ultimate goal of rehabilitation is for a person to feel confident in themselves and their ability to stay sober without any intensive help or frequent therapy. However, they may benefit from attending an outpatient program to ensure that they are continuing to develop and maintain the healthy habits that they have recently acquired.

Aftercare Rehab Phase 2 Goals:

  • Develop and strengthen personal strategies to avoid relapse.
  • Develop a personalized plan on how our patients navigate their lives at home with friends and family.

Structure:

  • One group therapy session per week
  • One individual session per week
  • Family counseling

This second step in aftercare rehabilitation is all about getting used to this new way of life. In time, sober living will begin to feel second nature. This step is also about surrounding yourself with people who support your goals and who will hold you accountable to ensure long-term success. Avoid the negativity and harmful behaviors that had once led to the addiction.

Drug and Alcohol Aftercare Rehab and Alumni Support

A sense of community is what can make the difference between periodic abstinence and sustained long-term recovery. We offer weekly local alumni meetings at our campus in West Palm Beach. At these meetings, there’s food available and a speaker that will communicate his experience for our alumni community.

We also provide weekly online meetings that ensure our patients have a way to stay connected with one another even if they return home and cannot attend our local meetings.

Our Alumni Coordinator, Sean Stiles, facilitates each meeting. Sean provides all the resources necessary to ensure that each patient has what they need to stay connected to the Beachway community after they discharge from the program.

Beachway Alumni

All of our Alumni meetings are facilitated by an Alumni Coordinator dedicated to providing all of the resources necessary to ensure that each patient has what they need to stay connected to the Beachway community after they discharge from the program.
